I have a drive in for recovery. I have successfully imaged around half of the drive using MRT with DE and reading the drive through the utility program (not directly through DE). Now the drive is giving all black blocks, even though I am using all of the same params as before. Here is what I have done so far:

1. Tried clearing G-list (has 4 entries) but they are still showing up
2. Cleared SMART

I initially used the tutorial on the MRT website for imaging with corrupt G-list and that was how I successfully got have of the drive imaged, but now I am stuck.

Any thoughts (besides getting a better tool....I have heard that one before)?

As a follow up...I CAN get single sector access using the utility alone, my problem is when I switch to DE to do the imaging.

Did you make a head map?

You need to clear the G-list and Techno off as shown below

Can you upload the G-list CP?

Would it be possible to edit the G-list and write it back to the track directly?

This is how I understand the bytes at the beginning of the module:

Code:
Offset(h) 00   02   04   06   08   0A   0C   0E

00000000  474C D247 780F 750F FFFF FFFF 0000 0000  GLÒGx.u.ÿÿÿ.....
          ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^
           |    |    |    |    | |  | |
           |    |    |    |    | |  | 4th defect
           |    |    |    |    | |  3rd defect
           |    |    |    |    | 2nd defect
           |    |    |    |    1st defect
           |    |    |    remaining defects (0xF75 = 0xF78 - 3)
           |    |    total allowable defects (0xF78)
           |    XOR16 checksum (0x47D2)
           mnemonic (GL)

I have tried clearing G-List (although nothing changes - values stay) and turned Techno off and built a head map but nothing has worked.

Is there a way to image from a particular spot in DE or do a reverse copy? It seems like I should be able to, but I can't change any of the values for a start sector/reverse image.

FWIW, I recall a recent thread where a PC3K user retrieved 3 corrupted CPs from a Toshiba drive. It turned out that all CPs were actually OK, but there was a bug (?) which caused PC3K to interpret the sizes of each CP incorrectly. This resulted in bad checksums. HRT has problems with similar CPs (eg 0xBB).

Perhaps your tool's single-click option is flawed in some way? That's why I'm suggesting that you manually edit the G-list (CP 0xC2) and write it back to its appropriate CHS location in the SA. At least upload it so that we can see what is wrong with it.

If you had PC-3000 this would be really easy, just turn on software translator and image through the utility.

I sort of doubt that a CP checksum issue is the root problem if he's able to read half the drive.

I'm not suggesting that there is any real CP checksum issue. PC3K and HRT are just two tools which report bad checksums for certain CPs because of a bug (?) of some kind. I'm just suggesting that the inability to rewrite the G-list may be yet another bug, and that it could be possible to work around this bug by manually making the changes to the G-list and then writing the CP back to the SA in CHS mode. Whether fixing the G-list will have any affect on the imaging problem is another matter.
