I have a IBM OEM ST1000NM0033 (Seagate) drive that just won't power up anymore. I tried external USB, unmounted the Interface PCB and clean the contacts to motor head and data contacts.

So I am wondering what is the best course of action to revive the drive and move data off it.

Here are the information I have from the sticker, I can get more information if required. I can dismount the interface PCB to get any other information from the PCB.

Alternatively you could start by measuring a few voltages.

Can you measure the voltages at the test points in the attachments? Use a screwhole as your ground reference.

yeah I have a DMM. I can take voltage and ohm readings. I just need to know all the green points you have pointed out are the positive leads? Some looks like resistors?

Ok here are all the measurements. 12V fuse might be tripped looks like?

There is no output from the Vcore and Vio section. This means that the motor controller IC is either dead or is not receiving its +5V and +12V supplies.

Both e-fuses are functional.

To the right of the 12V e-fuse is a zero-ohm resistor for which you have indicated "0V both". The component immediately above it appears to be either an inductor or a capacitor. Can you measure the resistance between the top end of the zero-ohm resistor and the adjacent screwhole? I would like to know whether this part of the circuit is grounded. Could you also measure the resistance of the inductor/capacitor?

the zero-ohm is straight thru to the screw hole to the immediate right. (top and bottom contact points)


As for the inductor/capacitor on the DMM setting of 20k it is reading 2.22

It makes sense about the motor, since it's not even clicking nor gyroing when powered.

ISTM that your most expedient solution is a board swap and firmware transfer.

Just a followup. Got my PCB replaced, and the drive is back up and running. Move data off of it now as we speak.
