Hello, I just ordered a new self drive. Meaning a drive for personal to experiment and learn.
I was under two expectations...
1)It will be a JMVW (India still has some old stock). Great if its a JMVW, Donors are damn expensive.
2)It will be a palmer which I can play with (apparently, the 20b/0B changes reflect well, Like fault introduction by tv9 10 short == bypassing 11 in the said mods,411 gets bypassed and so does 02 however the SED situation fails to resolve. So now I have requested a dump of RAM and will try about 24 shortlisted modules one by one creating a hit or a miss situation)
turns out its a WD with Toshiba PCB
heres the ROM dump
The drive shows SA lock features.

PS:Why cant I upload the ROM code here?
btw it starts with ASCII : TOSHIBA header unlike 'Z' in WD.

Why not post something meaningful like the actual model number or a picture of the label?
If it has an actual Toshiba PCB, then it's not a WD at all, it's a rebranded Toshiba (though, I've never actually seen that). Are you sure it's not a rebranded HGST?
(sorry, but I'm too lazy/busy right now to actually look at the ROM)

I am so sorry. I thought i already drafted the details..
Its a wd102pzx-08
WD10spzx-22z10t0 written at the bottom

No, I have a HGST that is WD which is having HGST label but WD internally.
This is inverse. WD label but Toshiba inside.

The ROM contains a reference to "TOSHIBA MQ04ABF100".
Is it a fake, or did WD actually rebrand Toshiba HDDs?
The R/N on the label is 800066, so that would be the WD PCB part number. So it looks like a fake.

sin,
Unclear. Does the drive work on ATA?
What's in the passport?

Hello, yes it is a SATA drive (laptop)
I am doubting the geniune-ness of the drive
wd website fails to have any warranty information

May be its a new drive and the seller still has to update records so that it reflects on WD website.

WD102PZX - top, WD10SPZX - bottom.
Of course fake
March 5th, 2020, 7:17
i think it is fake. The model number on the label is ambiguous, on the top it says WD102PZX, while you can read WD 10SPZX. The first one looks BS to me, the 2nd one is ok, but it should be a 7mm drive...
Edit: Ah, now i see E123 already spotted that problem...

lol, a "Palmer" with a G4311A PCB
Definitely a fake.
March 5th, 2020, 7:31
hehehehe....I am convinced aswell, this is fake..However I am waiting for 2 days to see if it reflects warranty. If not, then surely a fake.
The sticker quality, print - the label mistakes, all are so neat.
heheh
Thanks for the replies.

I have written a tool which attempts to identify fakes by checking the model number, serial number and DCX for consistency.

Thats pretty cool
There was not a choice. It was a COD order ie cash on delivery. I just paid and checked what I rx later.
However, I have submitted a review to the online cart.

PS: How are you?

Another clue that something is wrong is that the date code on the MCU is 1826 (week 26 of 2018) whereas the manufacture date on the label is February 22, 2019. That's a difference of 8 months.

Killed it.
