5 piece? You mean buying 5 equal boards?

Converting this hard drive usb boards to sata by using the adapter can let you clone the drive via sata (which is much better than usb protcol when dealing with faulty drives) but doesn't allow you to access on SA if is locked.
If this adapter is not able to unlock the board then you will not able to fix SA issue or stop automatic reallocation process or solving slow access issue.

I'm trying to understand this product ...
The adapter doesn't show how it connects to the hard drive PCB.

At a first glance, I believed the adapter still requiring to solder thin wires to the SATA contact points, but making this work more comfortable by offering some labeled soldering contact points, and acting as a SATA passthrough.

Then I wondered why there is an USB 3.0 port, additionally to the SATA data and power cables.
By closely looking at the first picture, it seems that the USB 3.0 cable connects to the USB3.0 socket on the PCB.

From the pictures, my understanding so far is that this adapter would offers two modes of operation :

a) SATA to SATA, when soldering wires from the contact points on the adapter board to the SATA contact point on the hard drive board.

b) USB to SATA, when connecting the USB cable from the hard drive USB socket to the adapter USB socket.

Correct?

One can use an unlocked board to deal with fw and use this adapter to clone. I will clone using my pcb anyway and decrypt later but that's me.

yes, it requires connecting sata channels to pcb by soldering.

The USB-A connector is probably used for powering the drive from it.

USB-A connector just 5V Power Supply, The new 2020 WD mobile hard drives have SED encryption, the data area is encrypted after using the decryption board, you need to repair the firmware and change back to the USB port to access the data.
