OS = windows 10 ver 10.0.19041
external drive = seagate expansion 1tb

the drive works fine on my desktop and girlfriends laptop (she has the same toshiba laptop).

Windows hardware sounds audibly like it's connected but it never shows up in disk management. It does show up in device manager but with the yellow exclamation point. Under Devmgmt it shows up as "seagate expansion SCSI disk device". In the "general tab" under device status it says "no drivers are loaded". But, if you go to the drivers tab, it shows the microsoft latest driver loaded. under the driver details, I have loaded AVGArdisk.sys, disk.sys, EHstoreclass.sys, partmgr.sys, and tosEXT.sys. I've tried uninstalling the device but it hangs forever till I have to end task.

My laptop accepts all other external drives. Just not this one but it works fine everywhere else so... I've conquered many disk issues over the past years but nothing like this.

Thanks in advance.

I wonder if it's not a driver issue from windows, can you boot to a linux liveCD (flashdrive) and connect the drive to see what happens?

If the result is the same then either the external usb adapter from the external drive is not well or your USB port controller might have an issue. Otherwise it might be a driver issue.

Thanks for the reply Setlec. I have so many bootable linux distros but all are on CD. I'll have to make a bootable usb and try that. I was wanting to try reinstalling the driver first but forget how to unpack and install it.

Thanks
