It's a budget brand amazon special from late 2023 - I bought another just on the off chance but the layout has been changed. I have it hooked up to the the LA but Im not making much progress, although as it's all vias it's making even the soldering challenging.

Based on the information you provided, I have made the following judgment:

According to the marking 8A1B 64GB, the chip ID is AD7E285302B0

This is a short-type 3.0 UFD, and judging by its appearance, it is highly likely to use a 4-layer PCB, which causes other wires to be hidden underneath.

The crystal marked 8A1B has a slim rectangular shape. I suspect its layout is as shown in the diagram below.

You should damage the PCB from the left side, going all the way down to the bottommost layer of the PCB. There, you will see the bonding die PADs, which you can connect to a logic analyzer using wires. However, I believe you are likely to fail, as this kind of work requires a high level of skill and expertise.

IMHO it not need damage anything. First need solder to vias and check signals. I suppose all signals will be on top layer.

Thanks both - interesting difference of opinion, have either of you recovered this case before ?

@csava : Im not digging into a clients drive blind, I don't have xray equipment so if the signals can't be found on the top layer it's going to be above my pay grade.

@arvika : I'll continue checking the top layer but so far I've not seen any signals Id consider to be the data lines. I'm not getting very clean reading though, even VCC has noise on it.
