Hi,

I have a toshiba mg09 hdd with broken and demaged sta connector. I ordered a new pcb to replace the board but I need to localize the rom/bios chip to transfer. Please, help me in the identification, there are two winbond chip on the original board, and there are one winbond and one cfeon chip on the new board. Which IC (ic4 or ic5) should be transfered?

Thanks

Hello Laci,
my best bet is to transfer both, but be very careful not to damage them, otherwise the drive turns into a nice and expensive brick...

Thank you for the answers. I transfered both of the chips to the new PCB board. The computer mainboard is able to read the hdd model number and the original serial number which belongs to my hdd but shows 0.0GB capacity in the bios. (DMA also 0 and SMART disabled/not supported)

So after booting the computer the OS does not identify the device, there are no block device for this hdd in the Linux.

Does it come from the bad soldering or any kind of mismatch of the PCB boards?

Does the drive spin up? The model number and serial number are stored in ROM. I'm wondering whether the MCU has a key.

Yes, the drive spin up, but I cannot hear the moving of the head. Probably the disk head does not move.

I'm not a DR pro, and I can't find any resource dumps for your model series, so I can only guess that there may be some compatibility issue with your PCB. Seagate and WD both use encryption in their recent MCUs, so I'm wondering if that is the case here. That said, I would think that the drive shouldn't spin up if the MCU key were mismatched.

If you want to continue down this rabbit hole, I would dump the ROMs with a programmer and pogo pin adaptor. We could then analyse them, or at least confirm that you haven't damaged them.

Thank everyone for the support, now the hdd works smoothly. I shorted two pins of IC4 during the soldering. (the ic very small) I fixed the soldering and now the hdd works, all the data available on the 18tb disk. :)

How did you solder this?

This suggests that IC5 is the dominant ROM. :-?

I used a cheap 300w mini hot air gun with a small nozzle working on 370-400C and low air flow for desoldering/soldering using lot of SMD flux and a few solder (0.25mm). I applied the small amount of solder and removed the uneccessary solder with a Weller soldering iron.

The biggest challenge was my eyesight and the small size of the IC. I don't have a microscope, and even with a magnifying glass, I couldn't see the IC pins clearly especially when they're covered in flux, shiny and reflects the lights.
