I'm aware that ROM swap is the way to go.
But, I'm just asking, if I wanna try without ROM swap (to see I'm lucky enough or not ), what will the new PCB do to my HDD if it's not compatible?

i just bought an rework station and extract the u12 and it worked like a charm now im recovering my files

Good to know that trying the new PCB without replacing the u12 chip didn't kill your drive.
I'm too fearful to try mine before i swap the rom.

I'm resurrecting this thread! I wonder how people got on with this?

My friend has exactly the same drive which has failed, they plugged the wrong power supply into their WD 'MyBook'.

I've removed the controller and there is no sign of burning or discoloration like in any of the pics posted. Is it worth trying the PCB/Rom swap do you think?

Oh I did mean to say also, the drive makes absolutely no sign of powering up when put into an enclosure which works perfectly. Not even the faintest vibration, dead.
