There is hundreds, if not thousands, of people who have been helped on this forum. Yes, there is many people who wasn't helped, because as you mentioned, they need to do a research and be persistant...

Back to original poster who asked about courses. I DID NOT SEE him mentioning about starting DR business. He just wanted to learn. And what did he get back???? NOTHING, bunch of people making fun of him and saying its not worth the trouble.

About Scott Moulton.

I have recovered bunch of data thanks to knowledge recieved from Scott Moulton youtube videos. I am a n00b but i am not stupid. Thanks to Scott i know how TO NOT SCREW UP clients HDD. I am not an expert but at least i can tell when HDD i bad enough that it needs to sent to experts who use their expensive knowledge and hardware to recover data.

But there are many cases that can be easily resolved. This kind of recovery does not need to be 1000 dollar expensive. I have saved countless of family pictures for people who could not afford ontrack.

About learning this stuff: Please do not be smug about it. We all have to start somewhere. You were a n00b too when you started. You made mistakes too. I make sure that i make my mistakes with hdd that does not need to be data recovered. The more knowledge i have, the more chance is that the client does not need to send their hdd to ultra expensive high tech RD business.

PS. I am not calling myself DR specialist and i am not in the business. But if i keep learning then who knows, maybe in 10 years from now i can call myself a DR specialist.

By the way i found this forum thanks to Scott Moulton. I have big respect for many users here, but there are some people who make me feel that i am idiot because i want to learn how data recovery works.

Then there were no serious problems. If only you have to fix a firmware, you'll need special gear to do it and it will cost $$$ and need to know exactly how to work with it. Does it count ? Note that nowadays 80/90% of DR is physical rather than logical/FW.

What sort of job do you do Scott ?

I took Scott Moulton's course in January of this year and found it to be very worthwhile and worth the tuition. Scott didn't oversell the content and delivered everything he promised and more. It's a hands-on introductory course and covers a wide range of topics.

You will no more emerge from a one week data recovery course ready to operate a data recovery business than you will come out of a 5-day computer forensics boot camp ready to be an expert witness. Sure some try, but most fail. You've got to do this stuff--over-and-over again--patiently testing, researching and solving problems to gain genuine expertise. The "exp" in expert is experience.

Scott works very hard on the course and doesn't profess to know it all. He has a lot of hard-won experience, innovative graphics and many worthwhile insights he generously shares. Scott spent every night with us, and some of the best value in the course derived from interacting with the students he brings together in an intensive and interactive setting.

I don't understand why you feel Scott has to defend himself, he doesn't. He chooses to teach and not hold back information, simple as that. Don't be pissed because you didn't think of it first or have the personality or knowledge to do so. Scott may not post here but that doesn't mean he doesn't respond to people who ask him questions. I have asked numerous questions and Scott has always responded quickly. And guess what?? He didn't ask for money and he didn't have a smart ass comment like most of you "gurus".

Hmm.....strange that so many "new" forum members are jumping to Scott's aid.

The real danger of the youtube videos and quick courses is that those who watch or attend may be tempted to experiment on a real customer job. The phrase "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" comes to mind here.

The only way to learn in this business is to invest time, money, blood, sweat and tears. But remember, learning techniques on a customer drive is a sure way to fail. I've seen so many half-arsed jobs over the years that the "good" that Scott and others think they are doing quickly diminishes. Proper DR businesses will survive through investment, R&D and effort. All the amateurs and cowboys disappear, but someone else will always think a quick buck can be made in DR.
