Hello,
I recently bought a Freeagent Go external 2.5" 320gb hard disk, and its been running fine so far. However today I decided to run chkdsk /f on it just for the heck of it... it came up with the following error "Truncating badly linked attribute records from file record segment (random number)"... I decided to give chkdsk another go immediately and this time there were no errors...
However doing this a few times, it often came up with a similar error with some random file number, and also got this error twice, randomly "deleting corrupt attribute record <128, ""> from file record segment (random number)" and "Inserting data attribute into file (random number)"
so did a check on the folders, and found that 2 files which had content before had been reduced to 0kb...
anyways I ran a full chkdsk /r after that, and it didnt come up with any bad sectors
also, ran the chkdsk /f a few times again, but those errors are not showing up for now...
any idea what could be causing the problem? Is the integrity of the drive at stake, and should I be using a different drive for any important data...?

Anyway I remember that that a few days back that I had pulled out the hard disk from my laptop without doing the safely remove hardware routine because my laptop was acting weird/locked up - so could the errors be caused due to my pulling the drive out at that time? But then again, I would assume that the errors would show up all at once instead of showing up randomly... Any clue...?

Thanks,
DM

Use Victoria for Windows or HDDScan to test it.

First what is your OS. If it is Vista or Windows XP Pro or Family then check disk is not the best function to use to check errors on your drive. Check disk is a dos base function that ran well with Windows 3.1, 3.2, 95. and 98. Once they went from a FAT8 to FAT16 and then in the end to FAT32 file system and then changed to NTSF this function does not show correctly in this environment.

Also I have done this forever and there really is no safe remove routine for a hard drive. If you system is giving you problems and locking up there could be another reason besides you drive doing this. Bad memory inside the lap top will also cause this problems. Also inside windows vista if you try to install software that is not supported by this program this too can cause this problems inside you system.

In the new file system for Vista or XP it is better to use Victoria to check your hard drive status for errors. This program will tell you how many errors are on your drive and the health status of your drive. This will give you a true reading of your drive. Stay away from Fdisk and scan disk they will only cause you problems in this environment.

I think that the chkdsk that comes with Windows XP/2003 (it's also in the recovery console) is perfectly fine for NTFS. In fact I prefer it to using the thing under the Utilities tab of the Disk Properties, since it gives you information about what's wrong, instead of "There is a problem!"

If you boot from a DOS disk, I think the chkdsk.exe there will not even see an NTFS partition; if it did, it would not make any sense out of it.

:D Had to make sure someone was reading. Sometime think that you help out and they never come back to read what you write. It is FAT12 typo error. Sorry

Victory does a better job that check disk does. It will tell you the status of your drive. Use it instead of check disk with NTSF

Don't worry. I understand all the DOS commands and functions of them completely. I have been working in computers before there was a printed circuit board and you had to draw your own map and hard wire the board together making your own bus cabling. You then had to make a programmable device using switches in 1 and 0 to program the clock and chips of the board to make it work together. After you wrote all your own programs not on 4" floppys but on 8" floppys and had two drive to work with. Monstor drives.

Now a days check disk has it purpose but not always. There is a lot better things out to use now than check disk and I just prefer to use them and not go back to old DOS commands. Thye have their purpose and functions but now a days you no longer need to load DOS into your system before loading your OS not like before with Windows 3.1 and 3.2. By the way still have an original lap top first one made that has Windows 3.1 on it and still works today. A little old and a little slow but if you are interested  can make you a good price  hard drive included still works not a lot of storage space but then didn't need it

No this one is a Packard Bell first colored monitor on the lap top. It weighs a lot and good for paper weight now.

Give me original and I try. But no crack for me software included. Got one on your hands you want to loan out for trail purposes? Besides it is a notebook and not a PC. Thought this card had to go inside PC not notebook or laptop computer :!:
