hey does anyone have a pcb with firmware- 2061-701477-800 AB my hard drive is a WD5000AAKS-00TMA0, thing with mine was the power connector went up aflame.. so the old board does me no good. the power supply even died as a result, sadly i learned that bfg will not warranty nothing but a replacement power supply which is still sad considering. the item i think that did fail was mentioned earlier the TVS. it so happend i think that day there was a brown out and under current planned a role in it. thanks in adv.

Hello,

Thank you so much for sharing your solution. I had the same problem (transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode in short circuit ) and thought my precious datas lost. I didn't manage to desolder it, but as it was completly cracked and burnt, I lifted one side up accidentally with my screwdriver, detaching one side of the small "R64" (resistor ?) from the board too. I thought it would be catastrophic, but I tried to put insulated tape between the board and the detached sides of the components. It worked very well :D . I will post a photo if it can still help someone.
I would never had thought of such a solution (tried to change the board without success), so thank you again.

Olivier

D3 appears to be the 5V TVS diode. If so, then you can replace it with an SMAJ5.0A from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.

You may be able to confirm its markings against my notes:

Western Digital (500GB WD Caviar, WD5000AAJS 32YFA0) from a MyBook chassis. Original symptoms were no sound/no spin-up and blinking light circle on the external chassis.

I extracted the drive and attached another power supply (I no longer trust the original power supply), then smoke started coming from the controller board. Disconnected power immediately.
I removed the controller board/circuit board and located the smoking component by reattaching the power for a few seconds: it turned out to be the TVS-diode [Transient Voltage Suppression], marked "TB13A V721").
I then found a page explaining the function of TVS-diodes at http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda- ... m-p/118908.
After reading this thread, I removed the diode by desoldering each side.
When I reapplied power to the board, no smoke or other visible things happened.
I then remounted the controller board and applied power -- DISK SPUN UP AGAIN!!! :D

Hooked the drive into an USB-port on my computer, using a SATA to USB controller -- Windows installes drivers....
At first, disk management found the disk, but was unable to initialize it, but when i plugged it into another USB-port the darn thing worked like a charm!

However, now the drive is no longer protected by the TVS-diode, so I'll just hurry up and copy the contents when I get my replacement drive in the mail.

Thanks a lot, people of this thread, for giving me the courage to try this. I feel awesome now! ;)
