I have a 7200.10 drive (ST3750640AS) it was sitting in an external USB box (active cooled, but, so it seems, insufficiently). One day, in the process of data transfer, it froze and is not recognized anymore. As I extracted the drive from the box, it was rather hot, I would estimate 60C(140F). If I connect it directly to the motherboard, BIOS would not recognize its presence at all. When I turn the drive on, I hear the drive spinning up as normal, but I do not hear the initial seek. On the other hand, I don't hear any unusual squeaks, scratching sounds or anything out of the ordinary.

I've got the diagnostic interface and here are the firmware boot messages from the drive:

Interestingly enough, when turning it on with the diagnostic interface connected, I did hear the seek, and as I turned it off, I did hear the click of the heads parking.

All I need at this point is to make an image of the drive (through dd); restoring the filesystem is not a question here. What I need to know is:

* Everywhere on the net, it's "Buzz HM SFI". Does the fact that I see 2 HM's mean something interesting?
* Does anybody see anything insightful in ?-output above?
* What is the [potential] cause of the malfunction and what actions do you recommend?

Buzz means the drive is spinning up.

HM is short for heads mask.

The code dump looks like buffer dump info, but I'd have to research to confirm.

Looks like you've got a firmware problem. I doubt it can be fixed without more sophisticated tools.
