Yes we are talking about the same thing. The "DEAD" board does not respond to NORMAL request. You can do the same on other drives.
And, of course, 5 minutes before died it was alive. Only stopped responding to USUAL ways (the drive should stay BSY forever or something like that). Of course assuming the MCU is working.

Which is not after incompatible ROm written.
If it can accept ATA there is no problem to rewrite it (via PC3k for example)

The kernel mode doesn't work either if you reference to this.

kernel mode works, safe mode doesn't
Because AceLab still don't distinguish kernel and safe (they were told to do that several times) now people don't understand the difference

Oh I didn't say the thing about kernel / safe mode.
so why "BlackST wrote...." ?!?

Is this post still alive?

I started some research on in-circuit programming. My primary interest is Marvel and ST cpu chips. More new territory for me
Can anyone suggest a good programmer for this purpose (I know there probably is no single programmer that covers it all) and possible some good reading resources on in-circuit programming,JTAG programmers, etc..
Also are there any forums in English for this matter? I tried to get an account with ST and Marvel for extranet access, but after a few weeks I have still not received any response. :(

Thanks a lot

Some more questions.

    1. Is there an easy way for me to determine which Marvel chipsets support JTAG?
    2. Does Marvel provide BSDL files?
    3. What do you guys think of Universal Scan's Boundary Scan Test Software Kit would it be compatible and sufficient?

Thanks again.

I've gotten lots of help and info from a few companies. I can make some recommendations. PM or MSN.

Quasi, also, I think any IEEE1149.1 compliant device would likely work with your device...I've not gotten my hands on a datasheet :( but the device you choose depends alot of what you want to do. I have an itemized list for a setup that can do much more than Universal and definitely work with the MCU's of interest, but it's 4 times as much money...

You have to get BSDL from Marvell then you could connect to USBSTSK. The Marvell DS is proprietary and you have to sign NDA, but once you have it and confirm compliance, you have everything you need. I have had conflicting reports and capabilities from different manufacturers. For example, some say that their device can read embedded flash from damaged MCU directly from pinouts. Others say cannot. I am still researching the damaged possibilities with a few companies' products. Some of the reasons that I had for doing this are no longer needed for WD drives, but would be useful for others of course.

I know ACE and SD both can create ROYL Rom now; and Hitachi too. But this solution can potentially still be applied to Seagate & Samsung. Plus on more severe PCB Damage of WD & Hitachi when SA can't be accessed.

This sounds promising :D

Hi.
have you really sucessfully completed the proccess and was able to get the datasheet for 88i6745? I tried to do the same, had several calls with Marvell but there are only datasheets of common components on their extranet, not 88i6745.

You have to go thru other party for this one due to licensing. PM sent.

Hi pcrecovery, I too have interest in Marvell DS for 88i6745. I have Marvell contact but he "says" he cannot help because it is only for WD. Will you PM me with your other party info too, please?

Also to all: I see no mention of the async serial i/f on 88i6745? If ROM has been corrupted by writing (kibul's scenario) is the serial i/f still active?

Well it was misunderstanding. I know how to recover the data from the drive when the board is not responding and i cannot read the native ROM.
I need to find a way how to make the board working again after incompatible ROM was written. Which means to find a way how to rewrite the internal flash of 88i6745 when the board is not responding.
I suppose you cannot make it, right?

Just came across this post so my response may be a bit dated. Since you recognize that you can recover the data from this disk without going to the trouble of repairing the PCB I assume you are interested in this as an academic exercise only. I'll give you a hint: you can bypass the internal ROM with an external one. There's a bit more to it than that but that's the basic idea.
