I noticed it is getting more DIY these days with bad results, we should have a sticky warning newbies about the consequences on DIY recovery. A warning sticky would be a good idea. I know this topic has been mentioned elsewhere many times but on this section there isn't one.

I went through about three pages looking for useful content, but had to admit defeat.

There are a few very helpful people in this forum, and kudos to them. I would not hesitate to send them my data. But there are also a lot of very selfish, rapacious sharks. In fact my overall impression of this forum is that it is a conflux of egos. Mere mortals such as myself are treated in a condescending, patronising manner. Those who are not members of the privileged Club are reduced to begging for scraps from the master's table.

Contrast this to forums such as sci.electronics.repair where newbies are generally treated with kindness, generosity, and patience. In fact, of all the forums that I've participated in over the past 15 years, this one is undoubtedly the least friendly. Instead it has a very mercenary atmosphere.

One particular thread that sticks in my craw is the one where I helped a "pro" determine the date codes on the label and components of his problem drive. Initially he was grateful, but after I told him that I was not a DR guy, he ignored my follow-up questions.

IMHO, the best way to dissuade beginners from DIY attempts is to show them how it is done. For example, the following article should be enough to convince a novice that head stack replacement is not something that they should attempt themselves.

Fzabkar, for the most part I have to disagree. I put myself in the mere moral category, and I have never had a lack of support when asking for help. The responses people get are directly related to how they ask their questions. Compared to some of the other boards on the topic, it is quite tame here. There is a problem with some members that only say "send it to a pro". Their answer is correct, their approach is wrong. The best way to educate the end user is to explain why they should not attempt it themselves, and if the new user spent any amount of time reading the posts here they would understand it. I think the more aggressive members are just tired of repeating themselves.

Headcrash is right an informative warning will help with all the repetition and can also eliminate a lot of the myths. Its just funny how he has no crediblitiy on this forum and probably leeches on the pro only forums too. Anyway the newbies who attempt the DIY recovery don't value their data enough to pay for the even most affordable labs. So no harm is being done anyway.

The problem is when someone do DIY on someone else's drive...
I face some of these and this is a real problem. Some IT guys just are unaware of their limits and this is not allowable.
Information in wrong hands is pretty dangerous.
I remember the time when I was learning. When I faced a problem I was not sure I can solve, I directed the customer to a large local company without messing up the drive. Should their prices have been unaffordable by the customer, I could try for a reasonable price, but it was the client's decision wether to take the safe way or not.
I think such approach should be considered.
Now I do not do such thing anymore, as I am convinced that we can do more difficult cases than that 'large' local company so it is not needed.

Having a sticky to warn newbies in this forum section i think is a must. If they choose to DIY thats their choice.

PM is a good idea, this way everyone is happy, but then again some people just want some credit on this forum.
