Do you have some working tool to send firmware to the drive ?
I know a way that might work, but you will need something like a full version of Sediv or a SRT-3000 to send code back to the drive.

No data needed and drive can not longer work after friend played with FW. Do you just want to play around with this and see if you can fix it. No harm done it has already been done before you got this one. If this is a learning experience then it should be fine to do as you wish with this one.

Other wise give up and get a new drive and go forward. There are some who will refurbish drives and maybe you can give it to them for a few bucks and get it back working. Refurbishing drives is a lot cheaper than fixing them and getting data back from them.

I think that Self Test would fix it (N2,AA,22) but you would then have to send to the drive ATA Overlay and Vendor track. And of course you would loose all data and it would take long time to complete, but you would end up with a re-certified drive.

You will need better tools if you plan to keep on repairing drives as you are doing.

If the drive is just for tests, try the following :

ERASE G-LIST :

CTRL+Z (AS SOON AS DRIVE POWER UP)
CTRL+R - Load Cert
i4,1,22

INITIALIZE S.M.A.R.T. :

Power OFF/ON and as soon as drive start CTRL+Z

/1 - Change to levet 1
N1 - Initialize S.M.A.R.T.

Power OFF/ON.

Post LOG.

Unable To Load Overlay 01|000A

Think it might be damaged G-List or S.M.A.R.T.

If not, no big deal as the drive is just "for testing" anyway ...

And if when you type ; you see something different from Age=50
Go to level T and put

Are you willing to trash the drive ?
You can try to press CTRL+T to continue selftest starting on that level "age=60" and wait to see if it runs up till the end. You might have to wait some hours. Check with . command if it's running while you are waiting. If it ends in error you can try to change age back to 50.
