I can ping any site, but any of my browser could not browse any website. I have tried sfc /scannow. As my CD drive is not ok, so I have copied the Win XP files to my C Drive and again try sfc /scannow. Now I can scan most of the windows files, but still some files could not found. Is it necessary to get all DLL files in i386 folder? Is this problem could be solved through sfc /scannow, or have any other issue? Please suggest.

Are you pinging numeric IP addresses or alphanumeric addresses? If you can reach the former but not the latter, then you may have a DNS problem.

This issue should be solved by a complete re-install of Windows XP, and re-install all your software. And I mean "should" as in this is what you should do, as opposed to this might/should fix the problem.

In my experience as a computer administrator of many years, when you start getting problems like this in XP, you might patch up the issue, or remove the malware, but the system is never going to be as good as a complete re-install.

It is not a huge task and your files should not be lost.

I would consider moving to Windows 7, but if you don't want to, a complete re-install is advised.

I agree with both posts above, I would say either you have malware causing DNS issues, or you had malware or malware tried to infect leaving a DNS issue.

The malware around these days is often too entwined in the system to remove totally.

You may be lucky with the software mentioned above, and get connectivity back, but I would be surprised if all issues went away.

Before talking about malware, patching, reinstalling etc. , maybe thinking about DNS settings on local PC and on router / resetting the socket layer and checking the TCP/IP stack alone ? 2 minutes...

I was assuming that if the op was trying sfc, then the reboots and simple stuff was done

But yes, start at the simplest things and work up to my suggestions.

Maybe a forum such as whirlpool would be a good place as they deal with internet and broadband issues on a large scale.

host file more likely got infected check the following

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

open with wordpad

in there should only be one ip adress 192.127.000

if there is more on the list then its infected

what your browser your using could be a simple network not automatic set

you can also try this tool to fix the problem with a tcp/ip repair

127.0.0.1 localhost

HOST file is fine.

localhost is your own computer and it is pointing home, 127.0.0.1

Thats why go see the geeky saying sometimes "Theres no place like 127.0.0.1".

BTW, you should not open system files with wordpad (or Write.exe as it is actually) you should use notepad or something like programmers notepad that wont change the format of your file to some arbitrary text file format.

I reckon you are getting confused with home, or localhost 127.0.0.1 , and a regular local LAN address of 192.168.0.x !!

192.127.000 is not valid at all, there are always 4 octets in any IPv4 addy... I will stop short of posting the IPv4 RFC and link to the wikipedia page of TCP/IP

But anyway, a valid idea to check the file, we know what u meant.

ok, as your issue seems not resolved and I dont care it isnt related to a HDD issue, some ideas:

1) PLEASE PROVIDE MORE DETAIL.... You dont specify the browser, but I am guessing IE8 or 9. If it is IE 6 or 7, please first slap yourself on the back of the head a few times(because I am not close enough else I would do it) then resume

2) Download another browser such as Chrome or firefox and try them, if it is working fine, it is an IE problem. In this case, go to control panel, uninstall IE and install the latest version you can from Microsoft. If you have to use another computer, then do so. There are also "portable" versions of browsers that run standalone without needing files off your system, and can help get you out of trouble in these cases.

3) scan for malware and viruses (I hate saying "Virii" its like platypuses and platypii..sorry, off on a tangent)

4) Seriously if you dont have a reason to stay on XP, then dont, get windows 7.

5) you dont mention having done anything else the other people have suggested except check the host file. do it and post the results.. They didnt use their time helping to whistle dixie.

6) get a freind that knows about computers come sort it for you, or go to a computer shop or google.

7) Surf your facebook again as one of the above will fix your problem

download another browser,

in this situation, making things simple...

use updated superantispyware, make a full scan on o/s installed drive... the prob can be resolved if because of malware.

if somehow u can't update super antispyware, then use another pc to download it's offline updates...

but again this does not mean your clean its more likely malware that wont let you get onto any web pages

try and download firefox and see if that lets you surf the net ok

If there are no other symptoms of virus or malware infection then don't make that a connection issue. Ransomware for instance, actually require the network to function so you can pay them.

It looks like you are ignoring the most fundamental network / DNS instructions suggested above in favour of faulty web browser or possible virus/malware.

This makes me think you don't understand what has been offered as advice.
If that is the case, say so and someone can help you along.

As you say Ping works try the following for "Connected", if that's no good, then follow the rest of the instructions.

13. Check connection status again. It should say 'Connected'.

You may not have to perform all steps, but it covers most reasons that could cause the problem.
If it still doesn't work, try turning off your router/modem AND your computer, wait 20 minutes and then turn everything back on.

remember malware or any type root kits can control the internet connection

if you remove any of these not the correct way they destroy the win socket on the os

if your not getting anywhere else i would say your network card could be faulty or the drivers have crashed

I also have tried Portable Firefox, but still not result. Portable Firefox open, but not access any website. No browser like IE, Firefox, Chrome works in my computer, even no software could be updated or activated online.

Well, to put it bluntly.. if windows is playing up to this extent, and especially an OS as easy to install and get back up as winxp, I don't fuck around with it. re-install, faster PC, cleaner and mind at easy the bad crap is gone.

Sure you may fix it by fixing the dns, tcp/ip issue etc, but re-install puts mind at ease.

um, you have paid your internet bill and it works, no? this is not as silly as it sounds, I have seen it catch a few ppl out.

you are not listening - it is not the browser.

when you can list all the results of the tests digitalferret mentioned then we can continue.

Think of of it like this:
browser needs google.com.
browser asks "windows networking magic" where is google.com
Windows networking magic"asks DNS where is google.com
DNS looks it up and says, oh google.com is at 74.125.237.5
so now it uses tcp/ip to get there.

any of that chain broken, it isn't going to work. there is a lot more to it than that.
