Hi All,

I have a Toshiba 2.5" SATA hard disk which does not power up. I have checked the fuzes and that's not the problem in this case. I have also checked and the motor/bearings are not zeized. It's a PCB problem.


I have had some problems in the past finding matching parts for a Toshiba PCB Swap, what should i look for in a donor drive?

The drive here has the following printed on it:
Toshiba MK1637GSX
HDD2D60 D ZM 01
DP/N: PH-0UM742-26402-7BW-69GL
FW: DL040D

And the number printed on the white sticker on the PCB is: TF47Y8YZX

Which of these numbers are critical to match on the donor part before i buy it?

You need to swap the CPU on the PCB as it contains adaptive data. Not an easy job and something we outsource to a professional electronics shop to ensure it's done properly. It's a BGA chip, so can't be soldered without an infrared solder setup.

Thanks but what should i look for when buying the donor? What numbers have to match?

Normally, I just match the model and factory site.

e.g. MK1637GSX, HDD2D60 D ZM 01 in your case

Also, as you have a Dell part number, you can try searching for that. This way, you're nearly always guaranteed that the drives will be from the same batch.

I suggest to check the preamp chip!
Toshiba sometimes not spin up, or spin up, but don't do seek when the preamp is damaged.

What is the best way to check the pre-amp to see if it is damaged for this kind of hard drive?

Make sure you have power to the motor connectors on the pcb before jumping to the most difficult problems.

Thanks everybody, on the 1st troubleshooting step - what does everybody else use as the criteria to buy a hard disk for the PCB?

Do you all match ALL of these numbers:
"MK1637GSX
and
HDD2D60 D ZM 01?

Or can some of these be left out?

Thanks CK, do you usually look for anything else to match? e.g country of manufacture or date code? Ot is the model # and the "ZM 01" in my example enough usually in your experience?

I always choose the country of manufacture. e.g. ZL01 T - Where T is the country of manufacture

Some suppliers may list the Dell part number that you have. If so, try and get that one as it's likely to be your closest match.

Ok - i found an exactly identical drive, exactly the same! Everything other than the serial # match.

I swapped the pcbs and the drive powers up now, makes a faint but repeated ticking like the head is trying to read then try again and again. It sounds like the PCB is simply not compatible this way. See the photo attached - which is the chip i need to swap? Chip 1 or 2 ?

Hello zed, next to the M Chip right hand, looks like an Atmel chip, at some models thats could be the ROM wich u need to unsolder and solder on donnor, i cant see very good on u photo, check t

I have the same problem with a toshiba hard drive and even got a pcb from a disk having the same model number.

My problem is that the pcb is different from the one posted before.
Maybe you could tell me what part of the pcb I have to swap?
