Hello,
Some days ago, my internal Western Digital WD5000YS-01MPB0 hard drive suddenly stopped working. Since then, it only spins up, clicks three times loudly and spins down again. This procedure is repeated yet another time till the drive doesn't spin up again.
As many people talk about different clicking sounds, I've recorded the particular sounds of my drive:
http://colinfinck.de/ClickingHeads.wavSo far, I've already tried a PCB swap with another WD5000YS that is still working. I know that you should actually resolder the U12 flash chip from the other PCB as well, but as the failed drive keeps doing the same sounds using the other unmodified PCB, I don't think that this will help. Also the working drive still spins up normally using the unmodified PCB from the failed drive.
Do you know what could be the cause of this problem? Is there anything else I could try myself or is a data recovery specialist the only way to go?
If the latter one is necessary, is anybody of you located in or near Germany, so that I could keep transportation costs low (or maybe even bring the drive myself)?
If you need any more information, please let me know.
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Colin Finck
