WD40NMZW-11GX6S1 ROM/PCB Swap Issues

August 2nd, 2018, 2:14

I've got a WD40NMZW-11GX6S1 from WD Passport drive with a damaged USB port. Located a donor WD40NMZW-11GX6S1 and did a PCB swap with ROM transfer. Powered on the drive and had access to all the files... for about 20 seconds, then the drive dropped out and began beeping, although it was still spinning.

Double checked the solder job on the ROM, no issues. Put the donor ROM back on the donor board and hdd, that powers up and can be accessed no problem. Any ideas?

Here are photos of the PCBs

Sounds like the drive has further issues (damage head for example) than a damaged connector.

Sorry to say, that’s end of the road for DIY :-(

Not at all.
If the OP knows how to deal with the "slow responding" issue, he could get his data back.

I agree with pcimage here. "End of the road for DIY"
Access to files for 20 seconds followed by beeping is not a "slow responding issue"
Typical for a broken USB connector. Something else was wrong before client broke the USB connector.

I also agree with PCImage. It is "the end of the road for DIY"

Often we see that the USB header is damaged after the drive is dropped. So you have a compound issue. Torn USB header, but also a head crash from the drop. It's pretty common.

If you're lucky, it might be just a region of bad sectors caused by the head crash and the data can be imaged using the original heads and the right data recovery equipment ($450 by my pricing - to give you a ballpark idea). If you're not so lucky, it's probably got one or more failed heads in which case you're probably looking at $700+.

hmm. could have been dropped but I don't believe it was, the description was that they had tried to plug in the USB port upside down amd applied alot of pressure. the pcb is cracked around the back of the USB port which is consistent with pressure applied directly to the port rather than from a drop. of course they could have dropped it before or after. still I'm wondering if there isn't some other issue. what is the purpose of the 2nd large Winbond chip?

How exactly does the “slow responding” fix magically repair a beeping drive?

Bad for you if you really don't know....

This is getting ridiculous.

I'm not in the DR business. I could, but I don't want to...

What about the hours, days, months and years of experience, try and error and research to just diagnose a faulty drive in a few seconds (some times with just your ear). Some times one particular issue takes months to figure out. Are those things are priceless?
I'm not forced to give the customer all these things for free.
Proper diagnosis worth money by itself.

I've got more then 20 years of experience. How about you?
Just another excuse for cheating....

Seriously!...how the h*ll can the OP get his data back by fixing slow respond? Please explain that for me. Can't you see with your 20 years of experiance that there is a physical problem with this drive?
I takes one to know one...

There's really nothing on the PCB you need to be concerned with other than the U12. That's the only drive specific code on that ROM chip. But, to satisfy your curiosity, that other Winbond chip is the RAM. It's possible that the sudden power off when the header broke also caused the head crash. In any event, it was definitely rough handled and has more serious issues than just the PCB now.

(sorry, it looks like your thread was hijacked by another discussion. BGMan doesn't know what he's talking about, he's not a professional so don't concern yourself with his claims)

So you're either contradicting yourself here or your "20 years of experience" is in replacing laptop screens and not professional data recovery.
