Hi all,
a new victim for me practicing
Is there a known spindle issue with those Toshiba 2.5" drives?
I know it from Seagate, 2.5" as well as 3.5", but in this case it sound as if the motor starts to turn and then shuts down.
I'll have a look at it in the clean cabinet later this week to make sure no head is sticking to the disk. Does this model have a ramp?

yes, it has a ramp. All 2.5" as far as i know.
Probably spindle seizure.

I have seen some new Toshibas with dead PCB. Maybe this is the one

Resulting in failure to spin? It sounds not as hard as the seizures I had so far, but starts with a hum as if the platters turn a little bit and then stop. May be sticky grease as well, sure. As the motor combo is a BGA package, it would be easier to swap the PCB.
Anything special to look for on these drives?

It can be spindle or pcb; luckily platter transplants are very easy on these drives if it is spindle. Check the pcb to confirm it's spindle before you do it though.

Really? I have only swapped platters on 3.5" drives so far. What's so special about those drives -they have two platters and therefore require a platte swapping tool to avoid misalignment. Another task for my mech

This drive have some ability to handle the misalignment.
Try it, if you can't free up the seizure....

OK, I've read some posts about the alignment non-issues on those drives so far.
I'm watching one donor drive on eBay, I wonder if I'll need it. Thank you so far!

Ok, no seizure here, but stiction.
The heads came free easily and look still very good on the microscope cam.
Now I'm wondering why they did not return to their ramp. Maybe the bearing seized while running and is free now? Not my favourite at the moment, but now I'll concentrate on getting 120GB free on the imaging pc and try to clone this thing
