Possible scratch in SA or bad/weak head 0.....From your first post I see the disk starts correctly...What's happend if you try to read sectors in LBA?....

All went well until I plugged the drive in.

I suggest to try again, the cleaning, if not helps, try to replace the MHA and try with this one....

I think wrong adaptives for this head or not matching heads for this hdd.
The head was clean after you used it in this hdd?
If yes, you shold try another one...
