hi to all
i have the above drive that was mounted in an external casing. Drive will power up and spin but not be detected in bios.
Looking at the external drive casing it came from there appears to be a burn mark right where the 2 protection diodes are on the board. the diodes measure ok and i can see no pysical marking to indicate an burns on pcb.

i want to begin by swapping boards to test and see what happens but am not sure if the rom is built in the main chip or not, there is a small 8 pin ic which i think may be the rom but an not sure.

can anyone please clarify if this is the case

picture included.

thank you

Nope, that looks like a transistor / driver array, definitely NOT EEPROM.

I suspect the ROM info is masked in the CPU.

ROM is inside the Marvell CPU. Look at heads...

finally opened the drive to start testnig it, pc3000 i believe does not have this family in it for support.
there appears to be fine dust particles on the top platter, the filter also looks a bit black from the dust but still looks quite clean.
the top platter looks to be fine, but cant say about the others platters.
when the drive is powered up it spins up normally, all sounds good, heads move ot outer end of platterand then start clicking and moving bakc and forth just around the outer edge of the platter.

so i suspect there may be some scratches around this part of the platter.

any ideas with which i can further try and diagnose this drive, i can replace heads but this may just be a waste if there are scratches there.

thank you

I am sure I don't need to explain why this does not make any sense.

I see your point , I could say it was a test to see if anyone pays attention to posts when they are written so you pass.
I meant it was a bit discoloured but more clean than dirty

I skipped this thread...

@crecomp : the ROM is inside the big Marvell BGA chip. If clicking with known good PCB same microcode, 99,999999% you have also head problem / preamp. If recal and spin down, the problem is another.
It is important : you have forever BSY, RDY, nothing at all in MHDD ? AND the terminal log what does it show ?

If you can see anything in the filter, the drive is already done.
This case needs special techniques to recover only partially.. :(
At this point a really skilled pro can recover about 90-95%.
But if you play more, the chance falls fast to 0.

no no no no... wait... an "impression" can make things appear worse : do a PRECISE analysis of the surface(s) and of the filter before judging the drive.

When I go to turn the computer on, the mainboard powers it up, it makes a clicking sound, like a relay activating every few seconds, it eventually gives up trying to work, and never shows up on windows as a hard drive. What is happening I have all my important data on this disk?
