Also, have you opened the drive up to make sure the heads aren't stuck to the platters? If they aren't, can you rotate the platters easily by hand?
Thanks or the reply. I will check on the SATA adapters tomorrow, but as it gave the same errors on both the PC3000 and the DDI this is probably not the issue. I did open the drive, the platters do not move at all and so the heads do not move from the parking area. Platters rotate just fine by themselves.
