I have just swapped the heads on the above drive. After the usual juggling with screw torques I got the drive to come DRD. I saved the resources on the PC3000 and put the drive on the DDI (probably a mistake should have imaged it in DE but needed the resource). Anyway... the drive will now not spin up at all. I have put a donor board on, same result. I can hear two sets of 3 faint electronic clicks and then the drives just goes ERR in both PC3000 and the DDI. This is not a head click as the motor is not spinning. No other lights show but ERR. This drive was dropped and I am thinking the motor may now have died? Any ideas?

I know this may seem mundane, but make 100% sure if you are using any type of sata adapter that the power is plugged in securely. I know that may sound stupid, but every now it will happen if I use an adaptor.

Also, have you opened the drive up to make sure the heads aren't stuck to the platters? If they aren't, can you rotate the platters easily by hand?

Thanks or the reply. I will check on the SATA adapters tomorrow, but as it gave the same errors on both the PC3000 and the DDI this is probably not the issue. I did open the drive, the platters do not move at all and so the heads do not move from the parking area. Platters rotate just fine by themselves.

Hi, such faint tick probably comes from the Pcb itself...usually common on problem with Cpu (Marvel) when there is a wrong flash of ROM, but can of course comes from a faulty Cpu if there is a short-circuit of the preamp...so reprogram a compatible Pcb and try again, if it occurs again it's probably preamp fault.

After checking the PCB out thoroughly, I put the heads back iin the donor. Its a failed preamp. Thanks for the help.
