hi everybody !
someone stole my laptop and i was using an hold hard drive as back up but my back up is not working !

seagate barracuda 7200.10
320gb
firmware 3.AAF
site code TK

use with external enclosure ..i tried different drive and they all work ,so enclosure out of the equation.
what happened ?
nothing special it was in box in a warm and dry place

symptoms : once it s plug and turn on the green light is lighting but no noise ,no spin Nothing happen.

i removed the PCB for examination : no sign off burn or over heating ,i cleaned all the connections no dust no rust or oxidation
the 12v is coming into the board and it s going to the 3 pin motor connectors
so i guess the motor is receiving power ! but dont spin

i opened the cage and the disk spin manually so its mechanically working...

does the motor need an information from the pcb to start running ?
or receiving 12 v means pcb send the information and the motor is just dead ?

i did my best and im not able to figure it out !! need experienced people

i found a seller to buy the exact same pcb but before spend 50$to replace something who in fact working
i would like to be sure that it s not the motor .

if you have any suggestions it ll be help-full ..

i can send pictures if requested.

Usually bearing get stucked on these series.
You can try another Pcb (5% chance), stucked bearing (95%).
If it's bearing you'll need pro help.

after opening the lid my advice is, if the data is important take it to a pro. and by pro i mean a DR pro not a computer technician.

Does this mean you opened the drive?

Its safe to try a new PCB as long as firmware matches.

In all my time of data recovery i have only once seen a dead motor, its very rare that the motor is faulty but could be possible.
Spindle seizure is qute common on this model of drive. So common that HDD Surgery developed a tool especially for these drives.

You will need a pro for this one to free the spindle, or at worst perform a platter swap to a donor.

Hey thanks for all your answer , the data are not so valuable so i dont want to paye 200$ or more for recovery..

im more interested to understand what is wrong.. so i might change the pcb . to exclue that possibility and focus on what is left if it doesnt work !!

the weird thing is that 12 v run to the pin connector of the motor i just dont understand how is it suppose to spin when it already receiving power ?

doest it need a signal from the PCB ?
