HDD is 'not initialized'

my HDD is telling me its 'not initialized' although it already has a partition full of data on it??! ... is it safe to go ahead and initialize it?

No, don't do that. Something is wrong with the drive. Do you have experience imaging drives? Suggest to power it off until you figure out what to do next!

no ive never imaged a drive...the drive is external and not under power at present... any advice??

Have you just moved it from other machine to this one?

Can you give us more detail, such as the model number of the external drive, and the model number of the HD inside the enclosure?

Does the drive spin up? Did you drop it or overvolt it? Is your OS reporting the correct capacity?

the drive does spin...but does not show a capacity.

more drive details:

Model - ST3640323AS
Serial - 9VK0CE3H
FWare Revision - ZZ7L
LBA Sectors - 0

This is well known problem with drives 7200.11 and 7200.12.
You could try to manage alone, or connect some good professionals from your location which are members here - pcimage, Guru ... and ask for a professional help
The choice is yours!

Assuming this is the same drive, he's already tried the "DIY BSY fix" with disastrous consequences...

Sorry to say that the problem has been exacerbated and maybe "bricked" for good :-(
