Hi guys

Seagate Momentus 120GB with scratched platter.
The scratches are close to the inside edge on the top platter.

I was thinking of trying an enlarged rubber stop or something similar to stop heads reaching the scratched area?
My question is, has anyone had a similar case & been successful recovering data using this method?
I'd like to avoid destroying another set of heads.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Ed

i did recover some data like you described from such damaged disks.
It is essential the head cannot reach the damaged area.
However, it is very probable the head will fail soon again due to microscopic damages or that modules are not readable.

I agree. On many occasions heads can be damaged by damage that you can NOT see. But as data is important to client, you can try head replacement. You will be no worse off if fails, and are in a win win situation by trying. Also, would be good to hear how well it goes for you

I work with someone that tried this on a maxtor with platter damage in the centre where the heads parked he managed to get a couple of GB of the drive before the heads died could be worth a try but try to know what you want to go in for.

I agree. Knowing what data is of more importance makes a huge difference.

After the exchange of heads, can be tried before making the image one copies direct of the files using DATA EXTRACTOR, mainly will be few files of more importance for recovery...
