Toshiba MK6032GSX SATA with burnt CPU

August 3rd, 2007, 10:32

Hi,

I have a Toshiba MK6032GSX SATA 2.5" drive that it's FUSE and CPU
are burnt out(Its visible on the chip).
I am aware of the fact that Toshiba drives keeps some critical information
like adaptive data inside the ROM. So swapping PCB or perhaps changing
the burnt CPU won't help to access the data
(I suppose that ROM is inside the burnt CPU chip).

Do you think there is a solution to recover data from this drive.
I appriciate any comment in this regard.

Thank you

Check if you have external ROM on your PCB. It's an 8-pin chip.
If you have it you can swap it to another PCB and it should work.

I thought the ROM info was in the "ARM" chip on the PCB?

That's what I've been led to believe on these.

I would like to be corrected if I'm wrong!!! ;-)

Hi Starling,

Thank you for the reply. I think there is no external ROM on the PCB.
Please have a look at the PCB image and correct me if I am wrong.

Again, thanks for the advise.

PCImage:
on some models (some GAS and GAX models) there is an external flash memory storing the FW, so it could have been true for this one.

Pninja:
Too bad it is not true in your case. U may try swapping the PCB and see if it is possible to read some sectors from the drive (probably not). If yes, then U will have to deal with the shifting points caused by the different translator...
It worked for me once but that was an old model (MAP).

Then what could be done in these type of cases. is Raw recovery is time saving solution after cloning.

Very interesting post. Must be solved.

Yep, I'm also interested in solving this type of case.

Thankfully Tosh PCB's don't fail very often, but when they do they are a pain in the ass!

I swapped the PCB in the first place. It started endless clicking :( .

Pcimage, Darkforce1:
As you have mentioned, these type of problems
are really painful. You have your data intact on the platters but
you are not able to do a damn thing

AFAIK, the only way forward is so transfer the "ARM" chip containing the ROM info, onto a compatible PCB.

AFAIK,
As I said, the ARM chip(Processor) is fired. There is nothing left there to transfer.

Hello to all

See what I think that after changing head and PCB drive will detect now the problem will be of data. what I think that data will be recovered but only if you try RAW recovery. may be some files with proper name and data will come out but I think you have data but in raw format.

Waiting for PEPE sir's reply.

Hi,

I could not figure out this thing up till now, but I am sure there is a solution.

darkforce1 sir,

Do you mean that the donor PCB is used altogether with its donor head(s) ? So it's more alike transplanting the platters to the donor drive, but in this case only using PCB and heads ? CMIIW

Hi cryoborgofthevenus

why to transplant platter to doner. No I mean changing PCB only of head is not damage.

Hi,
Can we transfer the platter to the donor and recover data in this type of drive if we match everything what has to be matched .this should give atleast some data reading success and with DE it should be better results.

In this hard disk all the impotent modules like Plist and Glist are in CPU as it is burned so thay are lost. So Changing head or PCB or swapping Platter will not help to get proper data.

Glist cannot be in ROM, it's a Growing list ;-)
