I have a 3tb that is doing the almost the same thing. I swapped the heads and how its runs without shutting down but gives "Sim Error-Remaining in BootFW.
Perform a double download without a power cycle". Did you get this?
I too can't get into terminal. Also, What do you mean by 'spam' CTR Z?

I'm amazed I found others with the exact make and model hdd and with exact symptoms.
Back in March, 2015 this issue happened for me and I assumed it was a mechanical failure but professional data recovery is way out of my price range.

I found this website because I searched on my PCB model for shorting the Read channel pinholes. I purchased a kit with a serial USB adapter and software specifically to diagnose Seagate hard drive's using the Terminal prompt.

I cannot make Terminal prompt because I believe my adapter is not providing the needed low-voltage TTL serial interface. I need to learn how to build this low voltage interface in beginner language. I doubt I have time to wait for this same part to be shipped to me as I'm under considerable pressure with about six more days to fix this hard drive.

Can anyone point me to a well done "how to make a low-voltage TTL serial interface" that involves going to the local electronics store for the parts? Think of my knowledge level as in Kung Fu Panda.. "There is now a level 0" and I need instructions along those lines. I'm smart and can figure things out if instructions are well-written.

Background: The hard drive does not/has not made any clicking sounds. The hard drive powers up every time but will not be recognized by any computer's BIOS.

Update:
The USB TTL Adapter I purchased is using the correct 1.8V as I confirmed with the manufacturer that the adapter was designed for the range of 1.8V to 5V.

I still cannot get a Terminal Prompt but I was able to use the software to read the boot messages. I was told that this information says I have head failure.

Four Questions:
1. What is a fair estimate of total cost that a data recovery business would charge?
2. Do you have 3-5 suggestions for data recovery businesses to contact?
3. Are there any recommended books that would help me learn how to repair the heads of a hard drive and recover the data? (Or is everything on YouTube?)
4. What hard drive information do I need to use to find a donor drive?

Hi jonathan_HPC,

1. 1000$-2000$ (If there is media damage might be more)
2. Do not know one in Texas, sorry. But other forum members might help out.
3. First, you can not repair heads. One can try to clean them but when they are damaged, you would do a heads-swap. For a heads-swap you need much practice, the right tools and a lab. That's nothing you can learn in a few days. Do not trust in youtube. There are some videos and some are ok but they will not help you in your current situation.
4. Match: SN (first 3), Model, PN, Date (as close as possible), Site. If all matches you will need special tools to patch adaptives and you always need some kind of luck on 7200.14 because even if anything seems fine (matches) there might still be issues you will have to fix.

i have same Disk St2000DM001 - same problem, i can entert f3 t .

Disk is visable by Bios and Ubuntu.
I run ddrescue -n -f /dev/sda /dev/sdb (another 2TB disk) but ddrescue is works wery slow, about 200kB/s

Head swapped a ST2000DM001 yesterday myself too. Only had around 1500 bad sectors in the end which were isolated to a few areas and only affected a few files. I'm actually starting to like these DM drive cases now that I fully understand most of their quirks.
