I'm back with a small update.

I've taken a photo of the connection of the serial side of things.

I haven't seen anywhere in the guides that I can find where they connect anything other than RX & TX

I'm hesitant to connect a ground cable due to this.

Gnd is the 4th pin in the hdd's connector, do connect it to the adapter's gnd pin.
On the other hand, is that adapter capable of 1.8V IO?

I ran the CTRL+X command multiple times again and it looks like the ground wire helped?

this looks like the drive restarted on its own, perhaps the power connector has bad contact or if is connected through a MOLEX-SATA power adaptor, there might be bad contact in the MOLEX side power connector.

yes, repower it. you probably don't need to power the pc down, just reattach the sata power cable
you might want to run it on a spare PSU instead of the PC's own one to make life easier.
the 'T>' part is the prompt, no need to write that of course.
Also, it is still a long way to get this thing recovered using remote control, and it might be worth finding somebody with tools and know-how near you... It should not be overly expensive at this stage.

I don't have a spare sadly, but I've got the cable coming out from the case, so it's not too much effort.

I really have zero money I can spare to spend on this. Barely surviving on what money I have as it is.

I'll probably do this command tomorrow as it is getting late and I'm a bit too tired to concentrate on it.
