I accidentally killed my hard drive! It is a 5v notebook drive installed inside an external enclosure. I got into a muddle and accidentally plugged a 12v ac adapter into the enclosure and now a chip on the drive pcb has burnt.

My question really, is, if I was to source an exact same drive model and swap the pcb is it likely to work?

No, it won't. There is firmware on the bad logic board that needs to be transplanted, too.

There's also a good chance that the wrong voltages toasted the preamp inside of the sealed enclosure. I'm afraid it's pro time if you need your data.

is the firmware the small 6-pin eprom type device on the top-left of the picture? I could easily remove and swap that. Do you think there's a large chance the pre-amp is also damaged? I do have a backup of the data, but it's from last month.

No, the EEPROM on these is a small 8 pin device along the side not shown in your photo.

Sure, the preamp might be damaged. But not 100%. Feeling lucky? One way to find out . . .

this ATDA have no NVRAM ,,only ROM... simply find a same DONOR ATDA 20 will help you....

Just match the 1st two lines of the code on the white sticker on the PCB.

If the only fault IS the pCB then it'll work, if it clicks you have head/preamp problems.

Then it's pro time.

Well, I purchased the pcb from Ebay and the drive is now working. Interestingly, I received a 07N7585/F80183A pcb, the original pcb was a 07N7585/F80183E - this was also the board shown in the ebay auction. Just goes to show you can't trust the pictures on ebay auctions!
