CP 8 / 10 / 14 are the critical modules loaded at startup especially 10 and 14 (zone table and mod config.) . The drive is recognised as factory alias upon RDY. If you have PC3000 you have ALL the resources to kickstart the drive, then you can perform further analysis.
NOTE : if you have head problems it will be likely a terrible experience because of the adaptives, i.e. more than 30-40 head swap until you find "the right one".
NOTE #2 : you should check THOROUGHLY the read channel with DDA and the signal(s) to pinpoint exactly where is the problem.
NOTE #3 : IN ANY CASE DON'T POKE WITH THE SERVICE AREA unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE and YOU HAVE A PROVEN BACKUP OF EVERYTHING.
And there are other non-documented ways to diagnose this drive family.

Hi blackst
thankyou for the reply and information
I have the pc3000 but don't really have any resources for quantum drives and none in the update box. I will need to chech with ace on this.
Also my manual does not have info on quantum not sure if this was removed from pc3000 udma
the only loader I have is starting the drive but showing it belonging to lct family with 400mb so mabye I inner to try and locate a correct loader to start correct testing
you mentioned some undocumented methods any chance of sharing these via pm
I wanted to work on this drive in the next day and ace support won't be around for 2 days for me due to time differences
thankyou for your help

Why not?
I like Australia.

But the drive can come to me as well, if this is more easy...
For diagnose:

hi Janos
i tested it more closely.
drive spins up and sounds normal, clicks 2 times, sounds like it is slowing down, spins up again and clicks 2 more times then stops clicking, sonds like it is spinning normally and stays spinning.
Thank you

Than the drive can't read the servo at all.
This is head/preamp/read channel problem.

NOTE : can be PCB too and the preamp can be OK.
NOTE #2 : forget head swap ...

suggestion:
Try to find an identical drive, and try out the PCB on the DONOR HDA.
If the donor works with the patient's pcb, than it is head or preamp.
BlactSt have right, this drive is hard.
I can help anyway, but need to get the drive in my hands.

i found an identical drive and swapped the patient board to the donor drive and the donor drive works perfectly.
donor board on patient drive drive does not work and clicks.
looks like it is a head issue,
i swapped heads donor to patient and patient still clicks as before, is it possibly a ismatch or an alignemt issue,
patient heads in dodnr drive dont work
donor heads back in donor work correctly so head swap technicque works well
is there anything else i should look out for ?
thank you
