hitachi donor ! exact match but not compatible ?!

March 8th, 2013, 8:56

hello ,

i had a hitachi
HTE541040G9AT00
P/N : 0A27112
MLC : DA1206
JAN 06

which died on me , while imaging using ddi4 .
so i found a donor " the guy was selling a lot of 2 hdds" donor drive specs is

HTE541040G9AT00
P/N : 0A27112
MLC : DA1206
MAR 07

the donor was testing to work 100% with the ddi .
after performing the head swap , the patient drive clicks , not getting ready .
i did reswapped the head back to the donor , and it worked smoothly again .

what is the problem ?

This has nothing to do with FW on this one. Do you have a microscope to check your platters to see if they are damaged or scratched?

Incompatible heads.

that's the thing am afraid of :?
but matching all the above critiria should have gave a great chanse of compatibility .

thank you all for your ideas .

today i swapped the patient drive's heads with the second donor "as i bought a lot of 2 hdds that can work as a donor "

same issue , drive clicks once and then ddi shows "drive is not responding"
tried the donor pcb on the patient drive after swaping heads , a nother click with different sound . but only one click as the previous pcb .

having 14 months between the original and donor production time , has made heads not compatible , inspite of all the other specs , totally match ?

Did you swap the NVRam too ?
Do you have some tool to start the drive using a loader file and check for module damage ?

nop , no nvram change was applied
and no tool to start the drive using a loader, why should i have concerns regarding FW modules defects ? as long as the patient drive was being imaged successfully until certain point , where it started clicking and stopped responding ?

thanks

This is very correct. The same issues are with WD drives too. What you think is a good donor is not a good donor and what you think will not work works. So this one will need a different set of heads on this one.

No you do not have FW issue, no you do not need to swap a NVRAM because you are not touching the PCB on this one. I would not regard some of the comments to you on this issue. You need to locate a different set of heads and try this one.

I second that .

@ raven4d
You can use (HTS541040G9AT) drives like donor, HTE differ only this Enhanced Availability .

And hope, you saved NV-Ram FW before setting PCB from patient to donor ( it can be blocked automaticaly , when code doesn't match with SA) .

Why?? Not all DR needs platter swap and this one sure does not need platter swap. It need heads that match so it works.
