7200.11 3 Bricked HDDs

November 29th, 2009, 16:27

I have a question. I think I cooked 3 HDDs a the same time, a Seagate 1TB 7200.11, and two 500GB Seagate 7200.11.

My power supply is an old Tagan BZ 700W running a EVGA x58 with a Core i7 @ 4.0Ghz, along with my ATI 5970, and 4 HDDs. One of the 500GB does spin, but comes up as 0MB in BIOS and not initialized in Computer Management. (Which seems more of a 7200.11 firmware problem than anything) I've tried two different computers on the two that wouldn't spin with no success, along with changing the rails the HDDs boot from with no success either. After swapping the PCB on the working one to the 500GB that wouldn't spin, I got a slight spin, although its mostly low clicking. My question is did my rail just blow up the 3 board on the HDDs? I was going to sell these as I got 3x 1.5TB Seagates during BF, but they are all filled with old camcorder movies/important very unlooseable information to me. (One of a kind items and concerts that only I have ATM). If I just have to change out PCB's (Which I think it sounds like), I wouldn't mind.

Can you upload detailed photos of the PCBs of the two drives that don't spin?

Here are repair procedures for Seagate 7200.11 drives affected by the BSY / 0 LBA firmware bug:

See the following technical bulletin:

AIUI, the abovementioned firmware bug does not prevent an affected drive from spinning up.

hi,
you need to change ROM chip also if you swap PCB.
