Hey Guys/Gals im back with another hdd issue
this is a real world situation now and not me just practicing.
Today my friends WD5000AAKS-00V1A0 500GB Movie drive crashed/stopped working.
What the drive is doing is spinning up for about 1min then nothing.
when it is actually spinning its not detected in the bios or anything.
What im wondering is would a PCB swop and a U12 transplant work on this
drive if he can find a donor PCB.
Ive done this procedure on a WD 80GB and it worked like a charm but with these
newer drives im not sure... any input would be greatly appreciated as per usual
thanks guys/gals

If you can find a chip in the U12 slot. And if pcb is the problem.

Heads problem, you will need to change the heads.
It's not a simple PCB swap. And you will not find any U12 there.
I think it's blue (-1590- or -1640-) with 2 heads, 250GB per platter side ?

You still have to change the heads.

Rare case, but they do exist.
You only have to find same board which has U12 also.

This is rare. Only other ROYL disk I have seen with External ROM is 2.5" Orion family. Looks like maybe some DragFly4 also use external ROM.

Dayum i knew that was coming....!! well i have NEVER did anything like swopping HSA.... so maybe i will bow out of this one.... if my friend needs that data then i will send it way.... one last question tho.... how do you match heads for these HDDs

I would try to avoid any internal work on this disk. A professional will charge you around several hundred dollars for recovery in this state, if you open the disk, even for a quick peek inside, the costs will increase to thousands.
