Can't open files

August 26th, 2010, 12:33

Hi

After imaging a bad disk to a donor, I scanned the donor with R-Studio, where I could find the files that I want. So I recover them to my disk. But, when I try to open no matter what file, they are always corrupted, although the file has the correct name and size.

How can the files be repaired?

Thanks

Try get data back on this one and when you finish your scan you can test the documents from the scan on this one to see if they are readable

Sorry, but I didn't understand...

From where should I get the data??

Thanks for your reply.

It is not from where should I get the data it is a program called "Get Data Back for NTSF or FAT". You buy it that is where you get it from.

Oh ok. I'm gonna try that. Is it better then R-Studio?

Thanks

What's the drive?

Could be a translator issue.

The original is a Toshiba 2,5" 80GB (don't know the model now), the donor is a Seagate 3,5" 250GB.

Strange, all the files are there, with full size. I can only open a few of them....

Thank You

Hum, I don't think so.. But I'll ask tomorrow.

In case of using EFS, how can I decrypt it?

Thanks for all your hints.

Hello Again

No Encrytion whatsoever. The client was using XP.

Just software can recover this, right?

Can this happen because the imaging was done by "reverse imaging"??

are you sure you completed full image? Have you looked at raw hex? Does it contain 'DATA'?

Re: Can't open files

The Image at 90% start to give many errors, so I decided to stop it and see if there are any files on the disk.

How to check the raw hex? With Winhex? What should I find??

If you have got pc3000 dataextractor then mount the original drive and attempt to recover one of the known bad files.
If you havn't got then use Dmde or R studio to attempt the same. Can you recover a working file?
In all of these programmes as well as Winhex it is also possible to view files as raw hex. You need to look and check the file header and also look if there is what looks like valid data following on until the next file.

Yeah, I can see some photos (just 4 or 5 in a few thousands...)
I tried to recover with R-Studio but only in the donor drive. How can I recover from the original if it has problems?
I'm gonna study the hex system.

Thanks

What did you use to clone this drive with. Even with problems a good toll for cloning can handle the errors in the drive. You should try again to clone this drive again and leave it to finish even if it has errors at the beginng of the drive
