Hallo all :

new guy here - did a search and have a few questions .

HDD ( ST3500320NS - firmware SN04 ) just crashed - spins but no boot - not recognized -

I see maybe a firmware issue or the circuit board issue - which way to go - I think try to find same used version in working order and swap the board to see at least if I can recover data - how much luck will I find in this endeavor ?

or a new PCB - seems like a waste if all I wish to do is grab data and trash - yes /no/maybe ???

dont understand how a firmware issue would effect me when I have been working this HDD for 16 hr daily for at least 9 months - i live in a hot dry climate so figure heat just got to it in the end

looking just to recover and trash - 2nd Seagate crashed

if you can lend some advise on how to proceed - appreciate your efforts and time
cheers in advance -

If it spins, it's probably not a PCB issue. Instead the symptoms are consistent with the 7200.11 BSY firmware bug.

See this thread:

Here is the appropriate Seagate tech bulletin:

Once you repair the drive, it will be back to normal, ie your data will be intact.

I'm not a Mac user, but you should be able to apply the same procedure using a Mac based terminal emulation utility.

You may first want to check whether Seagate will fix your drive for free.

say fzebkar:

Cheers again ;

according to Seagate the drive is under warranty - they ask me to back up drive ( seems impossible ) - rather grab the data if possible and send to repair an empty drive - dont know what the trust issue would be with data at Seagate

cheers:

You need to contact the right people at Seagate. They may be treating yours as an ordinary warranty case, in which case your data will not be saved.

The following thread discusses other people's experiences.
