Drive- WD10EADS-00L5B1 1TB
Using pc-3K

Ok, so client sent in the drive, stays busy on the register, slight calibration sounds and spinning.

Pop the drive into kernel mode and can get ROM and RAM.

Do a quick ROM head map change by disabling head 2.

(2),3,4,5,6,7

Pop the jumpers out and repower the drive and she comes ready, yay i foolishly thought.

Into the Kermit utility and get copy 0 of the SA, master resource copy into the DB.

Go to image to another TB and nada.. every sector errors.

Built a head map (came as 0 1 2 3 4 5) and turned off 0 just incase but to no avail.

Then tried all again and then another ROM head change to enable head 2 after it come ready and still zip.

Now short of a HSA swap am I missing something?

When you say every sector errors in DE, what kind of errors?

Error Add Mark not found, fire a soft reset at it then goes busy for a seccond and comes ready again.

A bit of reading indicates that one of the issues could be a failing head therefore the translator isn't loading properly.
Perhaps try disabling some different heads?
Another idea was to try modifying DE config and setting "Block size for reading" from 256 to 2 or 4.

uhm nice idea, i never tried, nut just now i have a drive whic is imaging by 3 heads instead than 4..
will give a try later on!

Yeah, head 2 had failed which is why it was turned off.
if I turn any more of the heads off recovery will be low quality.
And block size for reading makes no diff im afriad. (thanks for the quick response though)

However one thing I did note was that its out of a WD caddy with a inito chip...

Is it maybe smartwear getting in the way?

I don't know enough to give any more input. If it were just a practice drive you were fiddling with to gain experience with then it would be easier to recommend things to try perhaps, but seeing that it's a client's drive there are risks to trying something that could make matters worse. I'd be interested to know what the outcome is once it's solved :roll:

Know I know some others out there have had the same issue with map has incorrect size and may have some insight (Luke? please :) ) , I get a lot of WD drives but ive not seen this error personally after being able to get a copy of the SA. And im also now unsure about the worth of spending time swapping the heads..

Do I need to be ID=11h editing from another FW version or am I just heading down the wrong path?
Or 0A from the rom moduals?

I agree smart hotswap. Also check SA for errors, smart hotswap won't work if theres errors in mods. If that doesn't help then you should send it to a pro.
