ST9320423AS. attached pls find a faulty drive. the upper head lookes like broken or missing from factory.are ther 2 kinds of this disk, seagate's site says heads 3/4.

is there a way to identify no of heads with part no, or somethng else?

may we use a donor drive heads with 4 heads?. pending other parameters are the same?

tks
Ephraim

Ephram,

Yes, you can use 4 heads to replace a 3 head drive. In fact, it is usually easier to find a 4 head donor that matches than a 3 head donor which may or may not have the same missing head.

Good luck.

AIUI, the third character in the serial number codes for the number of heads or platters.

However, in your case this is moot.

AIUI - as I understand it
moot - "Of no practical importance; irrelevant"

The point is moot in this case because you've been advised that a 4-head donor will be suitable for your 3-head patient, so it doesn't matter which donor you get.
