Help for a diagnostic, Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB HDD

August 29th, 2012, 19:54

Hi, I'm a newbie here looking for help!

I have a Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 1TB HDD (P/N W: 0A38116) that recently stopped working. At first, I had problems recognizing it in linux, so I switched to windows where it worked for a few minutes then stopped working. Now it seems to spin up then make a low pitched click sound at a slow frequency. It is not "seen" by either windows or linux using two different enclosures.

I've read that thread: need-pcb-hitachi-1tb-hdd-hdt721010sla360-0a38016-t18870.html

It was in a USB enclosure. I tested the voltage on the enclosure power supply and on the sata power rail it provides and everything seems fine. I also tested the "L14" 12V TVS diode with a multimeter and it's not shorted (R > 200\ohm).

Here's a video of it spinning up, you can hear the sound it makes, I have not found a comparable sound online:

Here are pictures of the front and bottom, for any info:

I really wanna retrieve the data on this drive without paying too much, so any safe (non freezer related) advice to diagnose it are welcome. I'm also looking for a replacement PCB to test it out. I have access to a cleanroom (don't know which class) if the fix isn't too complicated, otherwise I'd like to avoid this option.

Thank you very much!

FG

Was the drive dropped? Or suspicious that it may have been?

Sounds more like a heads-related issue rather than PCB.

And this ones very prone to head crashes IMHO.
