Trying to copy data from a 2.5" hard disk using an external copy tool I heard some electric sparks when connecting the power supply...

Victim:
Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB, 2.5"
Model : ST9500325AS
PN: 9HH134-286
Firmware: 0002SDM1
PCB Number: 100536286 RevE
PCB Label: 100536284

And here a link to a shop selling the PCB with good photo's: http://www.onepcbsolution.com/729279968.html

I know I will have to swap the EEPROM chip, marked 25U406B: 8-pin, 512kByte
http://www.datasheetdir.com/LE25FU406BTT+512KB-Flash

I can order this PCB from the USA but because I'm living in Europe I can get it faster and cheaper from a local supplier. It's just that the local supplier is promoting the PCB for a different firmware version and drive capacity (but same PCB number).

I know some drives just store the drive parameters in the EEPROM, but considering the large EEPROM size is it save to assume all the firmware is in this chip?
Do you think I can just order a PCB with exact same PCB number and then swap the EEPROM chip? Even when the PCB originally was for a model with different firmware?

You might have just blown one of the Diodes that protect the device from over current. Can we see some images of the PCB board, both sides...

Hi, same "PCB Label: 100536284" should do it.

I don't see anything special to the components, except for the large chip closest to the SATA connector, it has a very tiny hole of about 0.2mm (0.01 inch) which makes me think this one got fried. Markings on this chip are almost impossible to read, looks something like 'UP08'.
