Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

I have a couple of Canvio 4TB USB3 drives I picked up on clearance at Staples.
When either one is connected to a USB3 port they will freeze (win 8.1) requiring AC reset, or in Windows 10 they give me a "Semaphore timeout error".
They seem to work fine on a USB2 port.
I've seen mention of this error before catastrophic failure on these drives.
However it seems to me like a firmware bug in the enclosures rather than a physical issue.
Anyone experience this?

connect it directly to the computer and you'll find out (unless there is no a SATA interface inside the enclosure)
