Hello, I recently got 4 tb Toshiba hdd with external enclosure, samsclub model. It stopped spinning and enclosure did not light up the diod as before, I can only see faint blue light intermittently. I did not drop this drive but may have used power supply from different enclosure. I pulled drive out of enclosure and when I put it in my docking station, the station seems to lose power with its light going dark. The drive is SATA MD04ACA400. I am willing to buy same model again to try to recover the files but I am very new to this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Even if you buy another drive from the same model to use the PCB as a donnor you will have to move the ROM and NVRAM chips from your old PCB to the new one as it contains data that is unique to your drive and it's required for the drive to work with the new pcb.

By now your best option is to attempt a PCB fix.

If it's a simple diode that it's shorted due to overvoltage provided by the wrong power adaptor you might get lucky with a 0-cost fix :

Thanks, I got a multimeter. I also got older hard drives from which I can harvest diods if necessary. I have to look up a screwdriver tip to remove pcb screws, I will need a starlike tip with 6 rays, any suggestions?

I don't know about Toshibas, but Seagate HDDs require a Torx 6 (T6) screwdriver. You might like to purchase a set of bits rather than a single screwdriver.

I got a second drive with same problem. I got pics of the PCBs here, let me know if it's good enough quality. Thank you!

Actually I'm pretty sure this one is a native Toshiba 3.5", not a re-branded Hitachi. So no NVRAM, just a ROM full of CP's.

The 8 pin chip located at IC10 is what you'd need to transplant to another donor PCB board to make it compatible. You might want to check the diode located at CN1 and the other one next to it with a multi-meter to see if it's short circuited. If it is, you can simply remove it.

As for the other Seagate PCB there, check the zero ohm resistors near the power connection to be sure they read 0 ohms. Then also check the two large diodes on the right side to see if they are shorted.
