Hitachi HGST Scratched surface drive!

March 11th, 2025, 3:25

Hi everyone!

I need some guidance or someone willing to help me on this case!

I am currently working on a Hitachi HGST Z7K500-500 HTS725050A7E630 drive
It has a very badly scratched 01 (top) surface

My question is. Can i anyhow physically cut the 01 heads of so that i can read head 0 platter 0?? If yes, what is the procedure and can anyone guide me through it?!

- I am a long time PC3000 User, have clean bench etc...
- I already turned off Head 01 in RAM HEAD MAP
- I already physically cut the 01 Head
But when i start the drive the drive still came up clicking
- I have tried swapping good pair of heads. Which did survive 12GB of data recovery

Many Thanks

You need to clean the platter first. Then cut/bent head 01, change head map in nv-ram and try to recover more sectors. But i think surface 00 will have damage too.
Such cases should not be guided via forum but checked by someone who knows how to deal with them.

I have cleaned both platters. Platters 00 is in good condition. I cut head 01, changed head map in NV-RAM however the drive starts clicking when the head 01 is missing

i don't know what step i am missing is the point. Or is there any steps in between??

Maybe SA is damaged, i don't know. Give the drive to someone who has experience with such cases. Get a donor and try to run it with one head. Learn how to handle it and then proceed with client's data.

Ok thanks for the help. Yeah sadly i work in gov environment. So any kind of outsourcing is prohibited. I will try my best then

I mean i know the gist of it. Just lack of experience. Thanks Melvin!

It looks like it was able to read ID once, then it failed, probably ovls are not loaded, so that's the first thing you should sort out.

btw, it is not a very good idea to start the drive like this, it can easily damage the SA copy 0 when writing copy 1 of modules...

So any suggestions on how should I proceed pepe??
