i have wd 500 av with pcb number 2060-701640-001 rev a but there is no rom on u12.
today when i turn on the computer, the hdd isnot detected on bios. then i force shutdown the computer and open the case. when i try to turn on again, on hdd there is white smoke, so i immediately unplug the cable. i think there is short on pcb.

this is the picture.
i didnot see the rom on u12. is there any hope to recover the data ?

probably the PC's psu got damaged and the drive experienced overvoltage on the 5V line. This is the worse thing that could have happenedt coz the preamp inside the HDA also receives this voltage, so it is likely to be burnt as well and it implies that the MHA probably needs to be replaced without powering up the drive with a replacement PCB. The replacement PCB on the other hand must have the same fw as the patient, or the fw must be matched by other means.
That said, this is likely not a DIY candidate.

HDA= Head and Disk Assembly
MHA (HSA)= Magnetic Head Assembly
preamp is located inside the HDA on the MHA. Read more about these here:

https://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

I don't recommend messing around with blind pcb swapping if the data is important. Contact a pro in your area who knows what these components are.

Hi Pepe!
I wont say the heads are dead unless they are in reality.

@konco1, if you have a multimeter, we can check the resistances of the preamp's supply rails. That will tell you if a PCB swap will work, otherwise you will be wasting your money and time.

Hopefully, this is not what happened to your drive:

@sin: i said 'likely' and 'probably'. But apart from the MHA replacement, there are fairly enough issues with this thing to say it is not a candidate for DIY. Ok, what if preamp is ok? replacement pcb still needs compatible fw to be written to MCU as no U12 is present. So in the end he will need pro help anyway...

I have helped an end user recover their data in this situation. That's why I wrote my ROM regeneration tool.

Hi Fzabkar. Yes likewise.

@pepe, i am just joking and poking with you my friend. :D
in any case,

What is > What if

Pro consultation should be the way if data is important. Rest DIY is way to go and try out.

Cheers
