Hello everyone,

I am having some problems with a Seagate 2.5" HD.
Although I can detect it in the BIOS, it will fail in post.
The drive has allot of bad sectors and BIOS can't read smart.
I believe my main problem is that sector 0 can not be read.
I have tried several different tools to recover sector 0, but nothing seams to work. I have tried to format the sector and I have also tried to add the sector to the defect list. But evertime I run a scan the sector still shows up as Bad. Here is my log.

I have also tried to do an image by copying the sectors to a new drive.
But without success.I tried it with media tools, but it doesn't get passed CHS 0,0,1 or LBA 0. (it's only the demo version, so I can't set it to ignore bad sectors) I also tried Copyr's HD DUPLICATOR which also hangs on CHS 0,0,1. If I start from CHS 0,0,2 it starts copying sectors but after about 25 sectors complains about not being able to get a signal from the drive anymore. after a few hundred errors it is able to recover about another 20 - 30 sectors and after about 1500 errors and 120 recorded sector just dies. I also tried a few other Duplication programs but the results where similar to the ones described above.

I also had problems with ATA password on this drive.
After spending frustrated time going back and forth I got the Master password. But  when I tried unlocking it with MHDD it would not work.
It was complaining about password being invalid, although I know this is not true. After trying it several times I gave up with the my MHDD unlock atempt(DEll drive). I got the dell xps laptop from which the hard drive originaly was taken and was able to unlock it from the BIOS with the same password. Does DEll do something to 2.5" HD's to prevent the unlocking from tools such as MHDD?
or is it a possible bug in MHDD?
Unfortunaltey I did not test any other tools such as ATAPWD to compare.
If anyone has had similar experience It would be great to share this here.

BAD sectors is very common in 2.5" Seagate Hard Drives. Do you want to repair the disk or recover the data? If you want to repair the disk I think you would be better replacing it. If you want to recover the data there are many ways to do it. Media Tools should be able to clone this drive, but you will need the registered version as you need to set read retries to 0 (default is 32!). You can also clone the disk in reverse, this way you will likely get all data after first sector and will very likely be able to recover the data. Other option is to add disk to Windows (you can add disk while windows is running and add from Device manager with detect new hardware) and select recovery software with good error control such as R-Studio.

Yes, I am trying to recover the data. The Device Manager in Windows is crappy. It will make the drive hang. It's because of badly designed interrupts with Plug & Play (I think) :roll:

I tried this before! Plus the drive is only intermediately detected in BIOS.
I think PCB is slowly dying as well. But you are right, I will try to set read retries to 0 and if this doesn't work I will try to do a reverse clone. I have thought of this as well but, I only have a demo version of Media Tools which did not give me the opportunity to change these options. I guess I just didn't get around to purchasing full version. But it seams worth it, so I'll go ahead.

It's included on several Linux boot CDs like KNOPPIX and INSERT (UBCD).

This attribute, unless it has zero raw value, usually means that it's the cable.
Try to change the cable.
