You may use "cheap chinese usb enclosures" BUT you have to be sure for the minimum current you can ask from those things. A 2,5 inch hdd needs usually 500mA and something over.. An USB port is theoretically able to give you the same 500mA, but there are a lot of motherboard manufacturers that don't respect this kind of "usb standard"!
To make it shorter, use always the external power supply or the second USB cable of the enclosure.
Did you hear the clicks on the same USB enclosure?
Have you tried the hdd on other Pc or notebook?
