I have seen a couple of WD4000KS & WD5000KS drives. (The 5000KS has 8 heads and 4 platters).

The typical symptom is three clicks or so and then shutdown / recycle.

I did a hot swap and was able to image data from heads 0,1,2,& 4. But nothing from 3,5,6 & 7.

Is this type of failure one of misalignment? Dirty heads? Bad heads?

Poor overall quality and misuse. How old were them and where bought? PM ME.

What criteria did you match for a donor for hotswap?

I matched model and DCM. Drives were manufactured about a week apart. I think this is close enough to try a heads swap, but I don't think I will attempt it.

I have a couple of these drives in right now; with two different failures:

Failure type 1: As Jono described, ~3 clicks and then repeat. For me these clicks are slow clicks in one or so second intervals.


Failure type 2: Drive struggles to power on; on my current monitor the 12v is spiking to ~1200 then 0, 1200 then 0 over and over every once in a while it will actually spinup. It doesn't seem to be a PCB issue; I am guess the internal circuit on the motor.


Anyone have insight on these drives? I am mostly interested in Failure type 2 I talked about here, as type on is more then likely heads I would think. (fun time there.)

I have a WD4000KS that clicks about once a second a few times and then shuts down. What do you mean by "hot swap" when you said that hot swapping the wd5000 fixed it? Thx

If you find donor, I would buy a minimum of 2 donors.
