One nuance I have not been able to discover is whether the heads read data simultaneously or if the preamp is also a multiplexer allowing the controller to read one head at a time.

Thanks, Ben

Heads never read data simultaneously. It is impossible in modern hard drives due to the simple fact that heads can change their position relative to other heads due to temperature/vibration/etc. So, hard drives read with one head at a time and preamp is also switching heads besides amplifying signals :)

Thanks for your reply. That is what i suspected, but why then is the alignment of the platters and of the heads so critical. Couldn't the hard drive use the servo tracks on each individual platter in order to successfully read the data?
