scratches on the platters. I opened the drive for a second, just enough to see the scratches then closed it down.

It started with a Unmountable_boot_device, so I ran a chkdsk /r... that never completed it would get stuck at 75% first time then 51% second. I ran active boot to superscan the data but that only showed me deleted files not what I had on the hdd before windows crashed. Now I can hear click, click sounds coming from the drive... there was 2 scratches on the platters. So is this over right, no chance of success?

Hi,

This can be a head crash first...
The chance for successfully recovery is low.

When you opened the drive chances of recovery were medium.
After you ran your tests i would say the chances are as good as zero.
Never continue to work on a drive with scratches.

How can you find out what causes a click/clack noise without opening the hdd? I looked at the PCB board, there was no burns or toasted chips so.... how are you supposed to find out what is wrong without opening the disks?
